"Art gallery? Who needs it? Look up at the swirling silver-lined clouds in the
magnificent blue sky or at the silently blazing stars at midnight. How could indoor art
be any more masterfully created than God's museum of nature?" ~ Grey Livingston

South Dakota is right next door to Minnesota but is a distinctively different place.
South Dakota has held a special place in my heart. I first visited
South Dakota with my mom and dad in 1969. It was a wonderful time
then and I experience that same excitement each time I visit there.

In 2005 I was asked to be a guest artist at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD.
On my way home I traveled the dirt roads and explored the countryside. I discovered
a small town called Lily and took several images of the old buildings in this tiny town. I took
a snapshot of a For Sale sign on a little house in the town. Later that week I called about it
and my wife and I ended up buying the place. We call it the Lily Pad. It has become our family
retreat and the meeting place for the Highway 12 Road Trip Photography Workshops held each
summer. Now I often have the opportunity to photograph in South Dakota. I have
dedicated this portfolio to images of my adopted state.
